7.1 Introduction 简介

Using actual and simulated data, this chapter takes a pragmatic view of the cost, risk and benefits of collecting process data by actively manipulating process settings according to a pre‐specified plan or design. We start by contrasting theory and practice, which introduces

the challenge of variation. We illustrate how, using statistically designed experiments (often called DoE for short), we can build up useful information about how a process works. Specifically, we will look at how laboratory data, collected according to certain classical designs, allow us to understand how process variation influences our ability to detect real effects and so control a process effectively. We then step back and look at how statistical models are useful in handling data, and how DoE fits into the more general Quality by Design (QbD) picture.

Next, we use a simulation to compare the utility of a traditional sequential approach to experimentation (using a classical screening design followed by a response surface design) with a more recent design approach (the definitive screening design). Finally, we touch
briefly on the use of computer‐generated, or custom, designs. In following this path, we will demonstrate that both definitive and custom designs usefully complement and extend the repertoire of DoE practitioners beyond the more well‐known classical designs, allowing them to more quickly, easily and uniformly realize all the benefits that DoE is justifiably famous for.
